FARMLANDS
COASTAL RHODE ISLAND
Landscape Design & Renovation
PROJECT DETAILS:
This 1930’s farmhouse sits on a 10-acre estate on the Sakonnet River in RI. The house and outbuildings were completely renovated between 2003 and 2005, and during that time Sarah Weihman oversaw construction and served as landscape designer while she ran the Newport office of Madison Spencer Architects. Design for the grounds was conceived as a “landscape circuit,” with a path connecting the main elements: bocce court, water garden, formal (“secret”) garden, a boathouse and a restored apple orchard. A sunroom, terrace and pergola were added to the house to allow a close connection between indoor and outdoor spaces and to celebrate sweeping views of the water. The project highlights the talent and skill of TJ Brown Landscaping and Kirby Perkins Construction, whose knowledge of historic preservation techniques resulted in a great collaboration.
